James turned to Sirius smiling, "I'd like to see that."
There was a loud crash from the other side of the wall, in Slughorn's office. The kids could hear him swear.

Gilderoy turned around to face Lily. His beautiful golden locks bounced as he did so. He stared at her right in the eyes. "Wow!" he exclaimed. "You have the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen. They are so big, and green. They remind me of when I rescued my brother from a giant carnivorous frog." He sighed. Finding a reflective surface across from him, he admired his own image. "I was so brave."
James was infuriated. "Hey! Lockhart! Back off! Lily's taken."

AMber shrank back in her chair not likeing the situation of the two guys she admired going over Lily... as usual.
Severus scoffed at the two.

Lily had laughed when Lockhart said this, but as if it were a joke that he could be that stupid, not as if she thought it was cute and funny. When James spoke she turned around to face him. "Oh, I'm taken, am I?"

"Yeah, yeah." Stuttered James.
Gilderoy raised one of his golden eyebrows, "By whom, may I ask?"
James frowned. He wanted to say that he was Lily's boyfriend. But the truth was that was only fantasy and not reality.
"Well..." James started, but couldn't think of anything else to say. Why did he speak without thinking?

Lily was tempted to say something about James not being able to reply, but decided she enjoyed watching him stutter in confusion, so let the awkward silence continue. She raised an eyebrow at him.

Peter tried to save his friend some embarrassment. He hobbled around his cauldron and squeezed himself between Lily and Amber. Putting his arm around Lily he said jokingly: "Obviously she's taken by me. Everybody knows that."
Peter had always been on good terms with Lily -- much better than James had ever been. But Peter had never tried to pull a stunt like that before... with anybody. He was fairly surprised with himself. He wasn't sure how Lily was going to take it. What if she slapped him or something? Hopefully James appreciated it. But what if he thought that Peter was actually going out with Lily? That would be dreadful. He'd be so jealous and their friendship would be over. Peter removed his arm from around Lily's shoulders.

Lily gave Peter a puzzled look for a moment before she laughed a little. "Alright, Pettigrew, go sit down before Professor Slughorn comes in," she said, giving him a half smile, before turning to the front and ignoring the table behind her completely.

Peter awkwardly stumbled back to his seat just as Slughorn entered the classroom. Strewn down the front of the teacher's robes were the remnants of some bright red potion. He smiled and took a seat on top of his desk.
"Welcome, welcome, back to another year at hogwarts. This year will be more important than ever. Over the last four years your grades have not really been of much value in terms of determining what you can do with your future. They have simply been a way to prepare you for your OWLs, which -- as you should know -- are at the end of this year. Your OWLs will determine which classes you can proceed to take in your next two years. Courses at the sixth and seventh year level require that you meet a prerequisite mark in your OWLs. For instance, to carry on taking potions you will need at least an E on your OWL." Slughorn turned to look at Gilderoy, "If you do not get a satisfactory grade on your OWL you can opt to take the OWL level course again during the subsequent year. However, this is not advised as you will have to either miss the respective sixth year course which will cause you to be under prepared for your NEWT, or you will have to stay at school an additional year -- a fate I'm sure none of you would be all to happy with. So, I advise you to stay on top of your studies, work hard, and get good grades this year. It is of the utmost importance." He stood up with a smile, "Any questions?"

Lily looked around the room, like a few others, to see if anyone was going to ask questions. As she glanced at Severus she flashed him a smile, knowing the both of them would be able to "stay on top of their studies."

Severus returned a smile at her but it was because her smile made it so he couldn't help but smile.
Amber sat there twirling her hair absentmindedly.
Sirius seemed bored already.

((That's because you're not proactive enough. Often times you don't do anything to push the story along; you just react to what's going on. Instead, try reacting and then add a little bit more, something we can react to. I believe this will help keep the story alive.))
"No? None? None at all?" Slughorn asked somewhat bewilderedly. "Alright then, if I asked you to explain to me what the exam will look like, what will be on it -- you could tell me? Of course not! I haven't told you anything about it. Remember, The only stupid question is the one that is not asked. Now, turn to page seven in One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi. We're going to start reviewing first year material. The OWLs are an accumulative exam which means everything you have learnt these past four years, along with everything you will learn this year will be on it. So, pay attention!"
